Chocolate Walnut Butter Tart Bars

The flavor of butter tarts is combined with crunchy walnuts and chocolate chips in these simple-to-make Chocolate Walnut Butter Tart Bars.

This dish has the flavor of a legendary Canadian butter pie in the background, with the extra crunch of toasted walnuts and decadent chocolate. Another fantastic dish for the winter holidays or anytime of the year.


For the bottom layer

  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup salted butter

For the top layer

  • 1½ cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup chocolate chips


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. To make the bottom layer
  3. Using your hands, rub together the ingredients for the bottom layer until well blended and crumbly.
  4. Press evenly into the bottom of an 8 or 9 inch square pan that has been lightly greased and lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15 minutes before pouring on the topping.

To make the top layer

  1. Mix together all the ingredients for the top layer well and pour over baked base.
  2. Reduce oven to 325 degrees F and return to the oven for 20-25 minutes.
  3. Allow to cool completely before cutting. These will cut best after they have been refrigerated.
